His second wife was Mercy Sturgis and his third wife was Rebecca Linnell who was also his first cousin and the sister of his first wife Ruth. Rebecca had to be appointed guardian of her dau.Abigail after the death of John because of an old English law which forbade a man to marry his wife's sister after her death and declared that any children of such a marriage would be declared illegitimate. His siblings fought the estate distribution.]
