- at age 17, decided to go to sea and on July 5, 1857 joined the crew of the "Metacom" at New Bedford, Maa bound for a whaling voyage. The ship was wrecked in December 1860 on the Island of Tutuila, one of the navigator group in the south seas; 700 barrel of oil were saved and send home.
June 25, 1862 he enlisted in the American Army as fifth sergeant to Capt. Bartlett's Co. E, 9th Regiment of Infantry, Vermont Volunteers. He was discharged 3/14/1863 at Chicago for disability, having weak lungs and loss of hearing in one ear. He received a pension thereafter. Marcellus was a photographer for 40 years in Coaticook, Quebec. His hobbies were music, played vilin and composed music; and phrenology. Some of his music was published. His son John carried on the photography studio for some time but later became a machinist.
